A quiet crisis is reshaping the American job market. Candidates are disappearing mid-process, declining to show up on their first day, and walking away from offers without a word. The phenomenon known as job ghosting has moved from an occasional nuisance to a defining feature of modern hiring.
A recent survey found that 28% of job applicants admitted to ghosting recruiters in the past year, while 76% of recruiters reported being ghosted, a figure that has risen sharply from previous years. The behavior is especially pronounced among younger workers. About 34% of Gen Z workers have accepted roles only to vanish on their first day, a practice now being called “career catfishing.”
The reasons behind this shift are layered. Candidates point to a hiring process that has grown longer, more impersonal, and frequently dishonest. Analysis of June 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that employers reported 7.4 million job openings but made only 5.2 million hires, meaning roughly one in three postings never resulted in an actual hire. These so-called ghost jobs have eroded trust between applicants and employers.
About 48% of job seekers say they were ghosted by an employer in the past year, up from 38% the year prior, according to the 2025 Candidate Experience Report by Criteria Corp. Many candidates now respond in kind, treating silence as the expected language of the process.
The financial consequences are significant. When candidates ghost after accepting offers, 22% do not show up for their first day, and the average cost per hire sits around $4,700, making ghosting-induced hiring failures expensive for organizations.
HR consultant Bryan Driscoll noted that companies often expect professionalism and prompt replies from candidates, then vanish without explanation the moment responding becomes inconvenient for them.
Experts argue the solution begins with rebuilding basic communication standards. Clearer timelines, honest job postings, and consistent candidate updates could interrupt the cycle. Until employers address the structural failures driving candidate frustration, ghosting is likely to remain a normalized feature of an already strained hiring landscape.
