Artificial intelligence is changing the job market faster than most people expected. While some roles are shrinking, new opportunities are opening up for those willing to learn the right skills. The good news is that many of these skills can be picked up through short courses and online certifications, not just four-year degrees.
The most in-demand roles right now include machine learning engineers, AI product managers, data scientists, and prompt engineers. A prompt engineer, a job that barely existed three years ago, can now earn up to $270,000 a year in the US. Machine learning engineers average around $170,000. These are not outliers. Workers with AI skills now earn about 28% more than those without, and people with multiple AI skills are seeing salary gains of up to 43%.
Several course providers have stepped up to meet this demand. IBM’s Applied AI Professional Certificate on Coursera covers generative AI and chatbots and can be completed in around six months. Google’s Advanced Data Analytics Certificate teaches Python and machine learning basics. For those interested in cybersecurity, a field seeing massive hiring, certifications like CISSP or CEH can open doors to roles paying well above six figures.
The World Economic Forum projects that 39% of core job skills will change by 2030, with AI and data topping the list of fastest-growing competencies. This means upskilling is not just for people looking to switch careers. Workers in finance, healthcare, and marketing are also finding that adding AI knowledge to their existing expertise makes them significantly more valuable to employers.
The window to get ahead of this curve is still open, but it will not stay that way forever.
